If you’re using old-school convection ovens, you’re basically baking the pads from the outside in. The surface hardens way too fast, trapping gases and “volatiles” inside the pad. This creates these annoying hard spots and internal tension. When you hit the brakes, those spots vibrate. That’s the noise you hear. The trick is using shortwave IR lamps. Think of it this way: hot air is slow. But shortwave IR radiation actually matches the frequency of the resins in the pads. Instead of waiting for the heat to soak through the skin, the energy shoots straight into the core. It happens almost instantly. Because the center and the surface cure at the same time, you get a solid, uniform piece of material. No weird shrinkage. No hidden air pockets. Just a clean, quiet stop. Getting the heat right To make this work, you can’t just use any lightbulb. You need high wattage density—basically a concentrated punch of energy to get those resins to bond properly. We stick with quartz-halogen tubes because they can handle being flipped on and off for batch curing without popping. But you have to be careful. If you crank the power too high in one spot, you’ll scorch the outside before the inside even gets warm. It’s a balancing act. We spend a lot of time tuning the distance and the wavelength to make sure the heat spreads evenly. The catch Now, this isn’t some magic fix that requires zero effort. These lamps put out a massive amount of heat, which means your reflectors have to stay spotless. If a little dust or oxidation builds up on those mirrors, your efficiency tanks. You’ll start seeing “cold spots” in your racks, and suddenly your pads are uneven again. You’ve got to stay on top of the cleaning. Keep the reflectors shiny, and the brakes stay quiet.
